Short answer: local SEO for a small service business usually costs a monthly retainer, and what you pay depends on how many locations you serve, how competitive your trade is in your city, and whether you need content, citations and review work or just a tune-up. At Advisible Technologies, our Local Growth plan starts from $399/month, which covers the core work most single-location businesses need. If you also want paid ads managed, our Growth + Ads plan starts from $799/month plus ad spend. Multi-location or highly competitive markets get a custom quote.
The rest of this guide explains what you are actually paying for, what drives the price up or down, the red flags to watch for, and how to tell whether local SEO is worth it for your business.
What local SEO actually includes
“Local SEO” is the work that helps your business show up when people nearby search for what you do — in the Google map pack, in regular search results, and increasingly in AI answers from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. A proper local SEO service normally covers:
- Google Business Profile optimization: correct categories, services, service areas, hours, photos, products, Q&A and regular posts.
- Citations and NAP consistency: making sure your business name, address and phone number match across directories, maps and data aggregators.
- On-page SEO: service pages and city or area pages written for what customers search, with proper titles, headings, schema markup and internal links.
- Technical health: page speed, mobile usability, indexing and fixing errors that stop Google from trusting your site.
- Reviews: a simple system to ask happy customers for reviews and respond to every review professionally.
- Local links and mentions: earning references from local organizations, suppliers, sponsorships and industry sites.
- Reporting: calls, form leads, direction requests and rankings tracked so you can see what is working.
If a quote does not clearly say which of these are included, ask. Two “local SEO” packages at the same price can contain very different amounts of work.
Common pricing models
Most agencies and freelancers price local SEO in one of three ways:
- Monthly retainer. The most common model. You pay a fixed amount each month for ongoing optimization, content, reviews support and reporting. Local SEO compounds over time, so a retainer usually makes the most sense.
- One-time setup or audit. A fixed fee to audit and fix your Google Business Profile, citations and website basics. Good if you have someone in-house to keep things going afterwards.
- Hourly consulting. You pay for advice and do the work yourself. Cheapest in cash, most expensive in your own time.
Be cautious with “pay per ranking” deals. They often target keywords that are easy to rank for but rarely bring customers, and they reward the agency for positions rather than for calls and booked jobs.
What makes local SEO cost more (or less)
The same service can cost very different amounts for two businesses. These are the biggest factors:
- Competition in your trade and city. A personal injury lawyer in a large metro faces far more competition than a pool cleaner in a small town. More competition means more content, links and time.
- Number of locations and service areas. Each location needs its own Google Business Profile, citations and landing page. Service-area businesses covering many towns need more area pages.
- Starting point. A site with duplicate listings, a suspended profile, slow pages or no service pages needs more upfront work than one that is already in decent shape.
- Content needs. If you need new service pages, area pages and blog articles written for you, expect a higher monthly fee than if you supply content yourself.
- Extras. Google Ads, Local Services Ads, Meta Ads, website rebuilds or CRM and lead follow-up automation are usually priced separately or bundled into larger plans.

Red flags when comparing local SEO quotes
- Guaranteed #1 rankings. No one controls Google’s results. Guarantees are a sales tactic, not a strategy.
- No access to your own accounts. You should always own your Google Business Profile, website, analytics and ad accounts.
- Vague monthly reports. If reports show only “rankings” and never calls, forms or direction requests, you cannot judge return on investment.
- Fake reviews or keyword-stuffed business names. These can get your profile suspended. Avoid anyone who suggests them.
- Long lock-in contracts with no clear deliverables. Ask exactly what will be done in month one, month two and month three.
Is local SEO worth the cost?
A simple way to decide: work out what one new customer is worth to you over a year, then ask how many extra customers per month local SEO would need to bring in to cover the fee. For many service businesses — plumbers, cleaners, contractors, clinics, salons, auto services — the value of a single job or a single long-term client can cover a month of local SEO.
Local SEO is also a long-term asset. Unlike ads, which stop the day you stop paying, a well-optimized Google Business Profile, strong reviews and helpful service pages keep bringing in enquiries. That is why many businesses run ads for quick leads while local SEO builds in the background.
How long until you see results?
Quick fixes — correcting your Google Business Profile, removing duplicate listings, fixing broken pages — can improve visibility within weeks. Stronger, more stable rankings in competitive areas usually take several months of consistent work. Anyone promising overnight results should be treated with caution.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do local SEO myself?
Yes, you can handle the basics — claiming and completing your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews and keeping your details consistent. An agency adds value with technical fixes, content, citation cleanup, link building and reporting, and saves you the time.
Is local SEO a one-time cost?
Setup work can be one-time, but local rankings are competitive and change constantly. Most businesses get the best results from ongoing monthly work.
Does local SEO help me show up in ChatGPT and AI answers?
It helps. AI tools draw on the same signals — consistent business information, reviews, clear service pages and mentions on trusted sites. Our AI search optimization service builds on local SEO to improve how AI assistants understand and recommend your business.
Do I need Google Ads as well?
Not always. Ads are useful when you need leads quickly or work in a very competitive market. Our Growth + Ads plan combines both so paid and organic work together.
